A rare 1794 silver dollar, believed to be one of the first to be minted by the United States Mint, is the most expensive one-dollar coin in history.

The specimen, known as “Flowing Hair,” features a portrait of Lady Liberty on one side and an eagle on the other. It was last sold for more than $10 million in 2013, breaking the world record at the time for the most ever paid for a rare coin.

The Flowing Hair coin is unique because of its exceptional condition and rarity. Only about 150 to 200 of these coins are believed to have been minted, and most of them were melted down over the years. The coin that sold for $10 million in 2013 is one of the finest-known surviving examples of the Flowing Hair dollar.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Nevada businessman in turn sold the piece in 2022 to the auction house GreatCollections based in Irvine, California, for $12 million.
