This milestone was achieved live on stage at the Bitcoin 2024 event, and its final verification was confirmed in block 853626. As Edan Yago, a core contributor to BitcoinOS, puts it, this marks the first permissionless upgrade of the Bitcoin system.

ZKPs are a type of cryptographic proof that allows one party to prove to another that a statement is true without conveying any information apart from the fact that the statement is indeed true. This technology enables developers to build layer-2 (L2) rollups.

The BOS team also demonstrated how ZKPs enable users to create conditional payments based on cryptographic proofs with BitSNARK, BitcoinOS’s technology for verifying zkSNARKs. This allows developers to create near-trustless bridges for moving their BTC back and forth between the Bitcoin mainchain and L2 rollups. BitcoinOS aligns with Bitcoin’s original promise—a trustless peer-to-peer digital money system. It remains decentralized, immutable, and secure while enabling efficient development.
