At the heart of the matter is Alexey Pertsev, the 31-year-old Russian developer who was found guilty in May of money laundering connected to Tornado Cash.

“This pre-trial imprisonment is improper in a case involving such basic legal questions,” said Pertsev’s defense lawyer Judith de Boer, as her client faces charges that are set to test when a software provider can be held responsible for third-party usage.
