米国の調査がステーブルコインを巡って渦巻く中、テザーは大きすぎて失敗できないと仮想通貨専門家が語る

Cryptocurrency issuer Tether Holdings Ltd. is facing renewed scrutiny from US regulators and prosecutors over the potential use of its USDT stablecoin in illegal activities and to launder funds, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal.

仮想通貨発行会社テザー・ホールディングスは、同社のUSDTステーブルコインが違法行為や資金洗浄に使用される可能性を巡り、米国の規制当局と検察から新たな監視に直面していると事情に詳しい関係者がウォール・ストリート・ジャーナルに語った。

The Justice Department and Treasury Department have been investigating whether USDT has been used to fund terrorism, drug trafficking and hacking, or launder the proceeds of such activities, the Journal reported on Friday, citing the people.

司法省と財務省は、USDTがテロ、麻薬密売、ハッキングへの資金提供、あるいはそのような活動で得た収益の洗浄に利用されたかどうかを調査しているとジャーナルが金曜日に関係者の話として報じた。

One line of inquiry is whether sanctioned individuals and groups have used the stablecoin to evade US government restrictions, the report said. Those include Russian arms dealers and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which the US has designated a terrorist organization.

調査対象の一つは、制裁対象の個人や団体が米国政府の制限を回避するためにステーブルコインを使用したかどうかであると報告書は述べている。その中にはロシアの武器商人や、米国がテロ組織に指定しているパレスチナ過激派組織ハマスも含まれる。

The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control has been considering sanctioning Tether because of its use by sanctioned individuals and groups, the Journal reported, adding that the move would effectively freeze Tether’s assets in the US.

財務省外国資産管理局は、制裁対象の個人や団体によるテザーの使用を理由にテザーへの制裁を検討していると同紙は報じ、この措置は米国内のテザーの資産を事実上凍結することになると付け加えた。

If Tether were sanctioned and barred from US financial markets, it “would be devastating,” John Paul Koning, author of the blog Moneyness, wrote on X.

もしテザーが制裁を受けて米国の金融市場から締め出されれば、「壊滅的なことになるだろう」とブログMoneynessの著者ジョン・ポール・コーニング氏はXについて書いた。

“And the ramifications would extend far and wide -- all the way to one of the best-known firms on Wall Street: Cantor Fitzgerald LP, which took on Tether as a client last year to handle the almost $100 billion of Treasury securities that that the company says it owns to back up the value of its stablecoin,” Koning added.
