Pepe price has had an impressive performance since it was launched in 2023. This week, the meme coin hit a record high of $0.000172, valuing the coin at over $6.3 billion. It has now become the third-biggest meme coin globally after Dogecoin and Shiba Inu.

But why are meme coins rising?

Pepe has surged this much as a result of high demand for the coin among users. According to CoinMarketCap, whales own over 45% of the Pepe token with smaller investors owning the rest. And the majority of the token holders are considered to be cruisers, who have owned the coin for between one and 12 months.

Traders are always searching for the next top meme coin that could explode in popularity. Over the years, they have seen Dogecoin’s market cap surge to over $23 billion and Shiba Inu’s value jump to more than $16 billion.

Moreover, traders have seen how these meme coins perform during crypto bull runs. In the past, meme coins outperformed large-cap coins like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin when cryptocurrencies were rallying.

This happens because of the lower notional value of these tokens compared to the bigger ones. On Thursday, Bitcoin was trading at $68,000 while Pepe was going for just $0.000015. As such, a trader could buy over 600k Pepe tokens with just $10 and 0.0014 Bitcoins.

Still, as I covered on Wednesday, there is a chance that the cryptocurrency industry will experience another winter. This is because the Fed may decide to keep interest rates higher for longer and that the biggest news of the year has already happened.

The SEC has approved Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs while the Bitcoin halving happened in April. There is also the potential for manipulation in the meme coin industry. The pump and dump and wash sales are common in the industry.
