South Korea has formally become a "super-aged" society, with people aged 65 or older now accounting for over 20 per cent of the country's total population, the latest government data showed Friday.

韓国は正式に「超高齢化」社会となり、現在65歳以上の人口が国内総人口の20パーセント以上を占めていることが、金曜日の政府の最新データで明らかになった。

The United Nations classifies countries where more than 7 per cent of the population is 65 or older as an aging society, those with over 14 per cent as an aged society, and those with more than 20 per cent as a super-aged society.

国連は、人口の7パーセント以上が65歳以上の国を高齢社会、14パーセント以上の国を高齢社会、20パーセント以上の国を超高齢社会に分類しています。

According to the data from Statistics Korea, the number of senior citizens in the country stood at 10.24 million as of December 1, up 250,000 from a year earlier.

韓国統計庁のデータによると、12月1日現在、国内の高齢者の数は1024万人で、前年より25万人増加した。

The figure marks a sharp increase from 7.23 million in 2018, when South Korea first became an aged society.

この数字は、韓国が初めて高齢社会を迎えた2018年の723万人から大幅に増加した。

The rapidly aging population is largely attributed to a sustained low birth rate and increasing life expectancy.

人口の急速な高齢化は主に、持続的な低出生率と平均寿命の延長に起因しています。

The total fertility rate -- the average number of children a woman is expected to have over her lifetime -- stood at 0.74 in the first half of this year, far below the replacement level of 2.1 needed to keep the population stable.

合計特殊出生率（女性が生涯に産むと予想される子供の平均数）は今年上半期で0.74で、人口の安定を維持するために必要な人口置換水準の2.1をはるかに下回っている。

Meanwhile, the average life expectancy at birth rose to a record high of 83.58 years in 2022, up 0.34 years from the previous year.

一方、出生時の平均余命は2022年に前年比0.34歳増の83.58歳と過去最高を記録した。

The presidential committee on ageing society and population policy said the government will come up with a demographic policy blueprint in the near future.

高齢社会と人口政策に関する大統領委員会は、政府が近い将来に人口政策の青写真を策定すると述べた。

"Considering the unprecedented and faster-than-expected pace of aging, we do not have much time," said Joo Hyung-hwan, vice chairman of the committee.

同委員会のチュ・ヒョンファン副委員長は、「前例のない予想を上回る高齢化のペースを考慮すると、あまり時間がない」と述べた。

"We will promptly come up with actions so that the country does not miss the timing."

「タイミングを逃さぬよう、速やかに対応していきたい」と述べた。

Joo added it was noteworthy that the country has been showing signs of a recovery in its critically low birth rate.

The number of babies born in South Korea increased at the fastest rate in 14 years in October.

韓国で１０月に生まれた赤ちゃんの数は１４年ぶりの速いペースで増加した。

A total of 21,398 babies were born in October, up 13.4 per cent from the 18,878 newborns a year earlier. It marked the largest on-year increase since November 2010, when the number of childbirths grew by 17.5 per cent.

10月に生まれた赤ちゃんは合計2万1,398人で、前年の新生児1万8,878人から13.4％増加した。これは、出生数が17.5％増加した2010年11月以来最大の前年比増加となった。

"The total fertility rate for this year is expected to reach 0.74, far above the previous estimate of 0.68," Joo said, noting such figures are a "hopeful signal" for the country's demographic challenges.

The vice chairman went on to say that the government will continue to expand support for families and pregnant women, and come up with measures to help women balance work and family life.
