HSBC has announced that it will restrict payments to cryptocurrency exchanges with immediate effect.

The bank will block payments from bank accounts and credit cards that it reasonably believes are intended for cryptocurrency exchanges, the bank said in an email to customers on Monday. The changes are being made to protect customers from scams, HSBC said.

HSBC will now automatically decline all transactions to cryptocurrency exchanges, a spokesperson for the bank told The Australian Financial Review.

HSBC's changes come amid a rise in scams, according to data from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Investment scams, particularly those involving cryptocurrency, accounted for the highest scam losses in Australia, at $171 million, according to the ACCC.
