The global crypto market kicks off May 2025 in a state of cautious optimism. While top coins are facing short-term pullbacks, investor sentiment is improving, driven by institutional activity and promising developments in the DeFi and Web3 sectors.
As apex coin Bitcoin (BTC) encounters resistance near the $90,000 mark, analysts are examining the potential for a bullish breakout later this month.
Meanwhile, Ethereum (ETH) has seen a dramatic drop in gas fees, which could have implications for both scalability and user activity on the world’s second-largest blockchain.
Further down the Top 10, the narrative shifts to legal battles and ecosystem expansion. As legal uncertainty looms over XRP, traders are setting their sights on potential price recovery. Cardano (ADA), on the other hand, faces a setback as it slides back below the $0.65 level.
Here’s a snapshot of the top coins on Friday, May 2025:
* Bitcoin (BTC) slides to around $94,230 after encountering resistance near the $95,000 zone. Despite the slight dip of around 1.5% over the past 24 hours, optimism remains high.
* Ethereum (ETH) drops to around $1,813, showing a minor setback of 1%. But the real story is the dramatic drop in gas fees, which are now averaging 0.563 gwei.
* XRP drops to $2.14, showing a setbck of 1.8%, but technical analysts are setting their sights on an approaching price recovery, setting a target of around $2.35.
* Cardano slides to $0.66, seeing a setback of nearly 4%, but forecasts for a rebound toward $0.75 are still on the table.
Bitcoin faces resistance but accumulation continues
Bitcoin is trading at around $94,230, showing a slight dip of 1.5% over the past 24 hours. As apex coin encounters resistance, pivoting at the $95,000 zone, traders are examining the potential for a bullish breakout later this month.
Optimism remains high as Strategy™ (formerly MicroStrategy) continues to boost its BTC reserves, reaching over 555,000 coins.
"Institutions are buying, miners are expanding, and the network is securing itself. A perfect storm for Bitcoin to continue marching higher," said Ben Armstrong, charting the bullish potential of BTC.
Marathon Digital reports growing mining capacity
The narrative of institutional interest is further illuminated by the latest report from Marathon Digital. The publicly traded miner has announced a significant increase in its Bitcoin mining capacity, now reporting a total hashrate of 20 PH/s.
This development comes as the mining industry faces growing scrutiny over its environmental footprint.
"Marathon Digital reports 20 PH/s of Bitcoin mining capacity. At current difficulty, that would generate around 13.3 BTC per day or nearly 4,900 BTC per year. A truly massive scale of operation. For context, the entire Bitcoin network currently produces an average of around 180 BTC per day."
Optimism is also brewing in the DeFi and Web3 sectors. A recent report by Token Terminal has revealed that venture capital funding for crypto startups has declined sharply in 2025.
