Queen Consort Camilla Bestows Maundy Money, Upholding Centuries-Old Tradition

In a solemn ceremony steeped in historical significance, Queen Consort Camilla presented Maundy money to 150 individuals at Worcester Cathedral, carrying on a ritual dating back to the 4th century. The Queen Consort stood in for King Charles III, who was unable to attend as he undergoes treatment for cancer.

Each recipient was presented with two purses containing specially minted coins. The white purse held coins worth £75, the same number as the King's age. The red purse contained commemorative coins marking special events, including the 200th anniversary of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and a Tudor dragon.

The red purse has its origins in the tradition of distributing alms to the poor on Maundy Thursday. This practice, which dates back to the Last Supper, symbolizes Jesus Christ's act of humility towards his disciples. The red purse represents the gift of money and clothing to those in need.

Queen Consort Camilla spoke to the crowd gathered outside Worcester Cathedral, expressing her best wishes for the King and the Princess of Wales, who is also receiving cancer treatment. The King and Queen Consort are scheduled to attend an Easter Sunday service at St. George's Chapel, Windsor.
