Pi Network Shuts Down Central Node Ahead of Consensus 2025 in Toronto
May 14, 2025 at 09:46 pm
Pi Network has shut down its central node and plans to release the source code for its blockchain.
The change came ahead of Consensus 2025 in Toronto, where the core team will be making major reveals about the future of the Pi Network.
The move was confirmed by Pi Network VietNames in a post on X.
“The Pi core team has closed the central node, ready to release the source code,” the post stated.
It also included a network diagram showing the central node being removed from the network.
The post stated that the core team will be releasing the source code for the Pi Network, aiming to increase transparency and allow users to see how the decentralization process works.
“Transparency Unleashed Anyone can audit the code. No more FUD about ‘centralized scams' or 'hidden logic'. If there's a bug or a backdoor? You'll know. If the consensus model is secure? You'll see it. This is credibility on the blockchain,” Web3 researcher Tanner stated.
However, critics of Pi Network say that key decisions remain in the core team's hands, and the referral-based mining and supernode model used by Pi Network raise concerns about decentralization.
Earlier reports highlight that the Pi core team still selects supernodes and holds about 82.8 billion PI coins, which continues to raise questions about the level of control they have over the network.
The Pi Network central node shutdown was timed to coincide with the start of Consensus 2025, which began on May 14 in Toronto. The event is one of the largest blockchain gatherings worldwide.
The core team will be attending the event and plans to make major announcements about the future of the Pi Network, which is currently in a closed mainnet phase.
The Pi Network team hinted at a major reveal in a May 8 post, where they suggested that multiple updates were planned.
"May 14: Announcement from Pi Ecosystem, May 15: Hint of something GREAT/GOOD, May 16: Dr Nicolas himself will speak," Pi UpdatesDaily shared in a post.
Another message from May 13 read, "2025/5/14—Pi is about to Boom."
These posts came just before the Pi Network decentralization update was confirmed.
The post included a schedule of upcoming updates from the Pi Network team at Consensus 2025.
The Pi Network team will be speaking at Consensus 2025, which will be held in Toronto from May 14 to May 16. The event is one of the largest blockchain gatherings worldwide, and the Pi Network team's appearance at the event brings added attention to their announcements.
However, despite the Pi Network decentralization step and the planned source code release, some features of the Pi Network are still blocked in several regions.
According to reports from Pi users, access to functions like "lightning" is limited in some areas, and users need to use a virtual private network to gain full access to the platform.
Moreover, Pi users remain covered by a closed mainnet system, and coin transfers are restricted, which continues to raise concerns about how open the ecosystem really is.
The Pi coin is also not listed on any major centralized exchange, which has prevented many users from using or trading their tokens freely.
On May 14, both the Pi app and the Pi Browser received updates on the Google Play Store, and the timing came just hours before the first Pi Network Consensus 2025 announcement.
Community leaders pointed out the update, highlighting it as a possible link to the planned reveal. The Pi app now has over 100 million downloads, while the Pi Browser app has more than 10 million.
The apps play key roles in the Pi ecosystem, as users mine the Pi coin using the Pi app and access decentralized applications using the Pi Browser. However, activity and usage levels are not fully clear. Nonetheless, the apps' popularity and the upcoming announcements at Consensus 2025 could bring increased attention to the Pi Network.
