Google is rolling out a new digital ID system in the UK that will use zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) to verify a user’s identity without disclosing personal details.
The technology will initially offer the capability to verify a user’s age for services such as alcohol delivery without revealing their birthdate to the service provider or disclosing any other personal information, according to a blog post by Google. It is in keeping with legal and regulatory requirements for services that need to verify a user’s age.
“Online platforms are required to verify the age of their users, but we want to do so in a way that respects user privacy and complies with relevant regulations, such as the Data Protection Act 2018 in the UK and the California Consumer Privacy Act in the U.S.,” the post reads.
This integration will not involve blockchain technology but rather builds on the research done by crypto developers to create ZKPs that can be used effectively and at scale.
The company said that it is making its implementation of ZKPs open-source so that various electronic platforms and digital wallets can access the technology.
“We’ve also been working with other organizations to identify additional use cases for this technology. Initial users of our digital ID verification platform include Amazon, Uber, CVS and MyChart by Epic System Corporation, which will allow users to easily recover their accounts, access healthcare services and verify their identity on platforms that support it. We’re continuing to work with other organizations to create new ways for people to use and benefit from this technology.”
The company says that the ZKP-based ID of Google Wallet provides support for several use cases in addition to age verification. It will also support domestic flight check-ins and digital passport services in the U.S. and works both online and offline.
This technology will likely serve as a common point of access for users to quickly verify their identity on several platforms.
