New Orleans’ First Super Bowl: The AFL’s Last Stand (Super Bowl IV, 1970)

New Orleans made its Super Bowl debut on January 11, 1970, at Tulane Stadium. The Kansas City Chiefs, led by head coach Hank Stram, stunned the heavily favored Minnesota Vikings 23-7 in what would be the final game before the NFL-AFL merger, marking one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history.  The Chiefs defense dominated, forcing five turnovers and holding Minnesota to just 67 rushing yards. It was a defining moment for the AFL and set the stage for the modern Super Bowl era.

Super Bowl Goes Indoors: Cowboys Shine Under the Dome (Super Bowl XII, 1978)

Super Bowl XII marked a turning point as the first Super Bowl played indoors, inside the newly opened Louisiana Superdome. It was also the first prime-time broadcast of the big game. The matchup featured a unique storyline—Dallas quarterback Roger Staubach against his former teammate Craig Morton, now leading the Denver Broncos. 

The Cowboys’ famed “Doomsday Defense” stole the show, forcing eight turnovers in a dominant 27-10 win that secured the franchise’s second Super Bowl title. Harvey Martin and Randy White were co-recipients of the Super Bowl MVP, marking the first time a defensive lineman won the award.

Biggest Blowout in Super Bowl History (Super Bowl XXIV, 1990)

John Elway and the Denver Broncos entered Super Bowl XXIV seeking redemption, but they ran into a buzzsaw in Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers. Montana put on a masterclass, throwing five touchdown passes as the 49ers dismantled Denver 55-10—the largest margin of victory in Super Bowl history. Montana’s pinpoint accuracy (completing 76% of his passes) earned him his third Super Bowl MVP, cementing his place as one of the greatest quarterbacks ever.

New England built a 17-3 lead before Kurt Warner led a furious fourth-quarter comeback to tie the game.

With 1:37 remaining, Brady—then a first-year starter—cooly led the Patriots down the field, setting up Adam Vinatieri’s game-winning 48-yard field goal as time expired. It was the beginning of a dynasty, as Brady and Bill Belichick secured their first of many Super Bowl rings.

The most recent Super Bowl in New Orleans was one of the wildest in history. The Baltimore Ravens dominated early, jumping out to a 28-6 lead over the San Francisco 49ers. Then, chaos struck—a power outage in the Superdome caused a 34-minute delay, shifting the momentum. The 49ers roared back, cutting the deficit to 31-29, but a goal-line stand by the Ravens preserved the victory. The game was also notable for featuring the first-ever Super Bowl matchup between head coach brothers, John and Jim Harbaugh.
