Explained: Why is IPL 2025 Robot Pet Dog 'Champak' in Legal Trouble? Find Out Details
May 01, 2025 at 09:16 am
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 7 has seen several innovations, but one unexpected development has taken a legal turn. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) faces copyright infringement claims from Delhi Press over the name of its robot pet dog, 'Champak'.
This follows the introduction of the robotic dog as part of IPL's broadcasting coverage on April 13 during the match between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians.
The case was brought up in the Delhi High Court on Monday, July 2, as part of a trademark infringement suit filed by Delhi Press, the publisher of the popular children's magazine Champak.
The apex court has reportedly stayed the broadcast of the upcoming match in Ipoh between Negeri Sembilan and Kelantan as part of the 2023 Malaysia Cup.
The setback comes after an appeal by the Southern Tigers against a lower court ruling that had allowed the match to proceed despite an ongoing case.
The case centers around a dispute over the broadcast rights for the Malaysia Cup matches.
Earlier this year, Media Prima, which holds the rights to broadcast the tournament on its TV channels, filed a suit against the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and Kelantan for allegedly granting streaming rights to the matches to another party without its consent.
The case was then brought to the High Court by Kelantan, who argued that the lower court's decision to allow the match to proceed despite the pending case was flawed.
The High Court, however, upheld the lower court's ruling, leading Media Prima to file an appeal with the apex court.
The apex court has now set July 9 for the next hearing of the case.
In the meantime, the match between Negeri Sembilan and Kelantan, which was originally scheduled for August 26, will be postponed.
The setback is a major blow for both fans and players, who were eagerly anticipating the start of the new season.
It also threatens to further delay the already-disrupted Malaysia Cup campaign.
The tournament was originally set to begin in March but faced several postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The group stage matches finally kicked off last month, with the quarterfinal matches set to begin in September.
The apex court's decision to stay the match comes as no surprise, given the importance of the broadcast rights issue to both Media Prima and FAM.
However, the setback will undoubtedly disappoint fans who were looking forward to seeing some live football action this weekend.
It remains to be seen when and if the match will be rescheduled, and what impact this will have on the overall Malaysia Cup schedule.input: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season has seen several innovations, with one unexpected development taking a legal turn.

The trademark case was being heard by Justice Saurabh Banerjee, who declined to pass an interim injunction at this stage. The matter will now be further dealt with on July 9.
