Cardano (ADA) is Planning the Ouroboros Leios Upgrade, Which Will Massively Boost Scalability and Efficiency
May 05, 2025 at 05:01 pm
In the dynamic landscape of cryptocurrency, projects must adapt to stay relevant. Top crypto projects, including the “indispensable” Bitcoin, must keep up with trends.
Earlier this year, Solana was the hot topic, quickly overtaking Ethereum as the hub for some of the best meme coins to buy due to its speed and low transaction costs. At one time, Cardano, with its research-driven, methodical approach to crypto, was the talk of the town. That time has passed, and now speed is paramount; speed and, of course, low transaction costs. After all, even the best meme coin onchain traders are very sensitive to fees.
Now, as part of its transition to the Voltaire stage, Input Output Global (IOG), the lead developer, is preparing to roll out a key upgrade: Ouroboros Leios.
Supporters on multiple social media platforms, especially X, believe Leios will make the network more performant, perhaps even flipping Solana and top the “popularity” charts. Why are they so confident?
To understand, we must examine what Ouroboros Leios brings to the table and why it could mark a turning point for Cardano. The focus is on scalability.
Although Cardano has long secured a spot in the top 10, it can only process fewer than 20 transactions per second (TPS), with a peak at 40 TPS. At this pace, it is way slower than Solana, which has a throughput of 65,000 TPs. Moreover, it can’t even come close to any layer-2 solutions for Ethereum, like Arbitrum and Base.
Ouroboros Leios aims to address this. As outlined in its 2022 whitepaper, the upgrade will scale Cardano without compromising security or decentralization. Leios introduces new methods to decouple three of Cardano’s weaknesses: transaction transmission, validation, and block ordering.
By introducing input blocks, transaction data can be transmitted faster. Meanwhile, endorsement and ranking blocks will streamline transaction validation and ordering, maintaining platform coherence.
Developers say the parallel processing enabled by Leios will allow the network to process significantly more transactions, drastically reducing bottlenecks the 3,000 stake pool operators (validators) face.
Part Of A Grand Plan To Scale: Time To Buy ADA Crypto?
Once live, Leios could push transaction processing speeds to over 10,000 TPS. Theoretically, the upgrade could enable the network to process িন্যাস 1 million transactions per second.
Moreover, Leios is only one part of Cardano’s scaling roadmap. Plans to integrate Ouroboros Peras, which aims to reduce transaction finality; Hydra, a layer-2 scaling solution for Cardano; and Midgard, an optimistic rollup platform, will further scale Cardano.
When Cardano completes its scaling milestone, ADA could rise as the network hosts more DeFi, meme coin, and NFT activities. If competing networks like Solana and Ethereum fail to keep up, ADA could be among the best cryptos to buy in the coming years.
(ADAUSDT)
Currently, ADAUSDT is trading sideways above $0.50. If the bullish momentum from Q4 2024 returns, prices could easily surpass $1 in a renewed buy trend continuation formation.
