BitcoinOS Successfully Executes the First-Ever Bridgeless Cross-Chain Transfer of Bitcoin

BitcoinOS Successfully Executes the First-Ever Bridgeless Cross-Chain Transfer of Bitcoin

BitcoinOS has reportedly executed the first-ever bridgeless cross-chain transfer of bitcoin, moving 1 BTC between the Bitcoin and Cardano blockchains without relying on traditional intermediaries.

The demonstration, which was executed on mainnet and can be viewed here, marks a pivotal advancement in blockchain interoperability. By wrapping 1 BTC into xBTC—a programmable token secured through BitcoinOS’ BitSNARK zero-knowledge proofs—the transaction circumvented custodial bridges, reducing risks and latency.

After the xBTC was transferred to Cardano and back to Bitcoin, showcasing seamless cross-chain functionality, BitcoinOS confirmed the successful completion of the transfer.

BitcoinOS collaborated with Sundial Protocol, a hybrid Bitcoin-Cardano layer two (L2) solution, and Handle, Cardano’s identity platform, to execute the transfer. The process essentially involved wrapping BTC into xBTC on Bitcoin, bridgelessly moving it to Sundial’s Cardano wallet, transferring it to Handle’s wallet, and returning it to Bitcoin before unwrapping it back to native BTC.

Edan Yago, a core BitcoinOS contributor, said the demo proves Bitcoin can gain smart contract capabilities while remaining trustlessly anchored to its blockchain.

“This opens incredible possibilities for interoperability and new use cases that respect the original vision of Bitcoin. We can now seamlessly connect different chains and build hybrid L2 solutions with full Bitcoin security,” Yago added.

The demonstration’s abilities turns “Cardano into a seamless DeFi layer for Bitcoin,” Yago noted, highlighting implications for other UTXO-based chains.

Sheldon Hunt, founder of Sundial Protocol, described the achievement as a turning point for decentralized interoperability.

“We're able to take BTC, the original cryptocurrency, and move it to Cardano's ecosystem through a bridgeless method, utilizing Sundial's L2 solution for a seamless and trustless transfer,” said Hunt. “It's a turning point for the entire blockchain ecosystem.”

Jonah Peralta of Handle emphasized the breakthrough’s significance for Bitcoin’s utility.

"This integration unlocks a new era of possibilities, allowing Bitcoin to fully leverage its potential in a world of decentralized applications and services," Peralta said. "With Handle's identity solution on Cardano and Sundial's L2, we can now enable Bitcoin to participate in DeFi, NFTs, and other smart contract use cases while still enjoying the inherent security and decentralization of the Bitcoin blockchain."
