Worldcoin Launches in Six US Cities, Allowing Users to Earn WLD Tokens by Verifying Their Personhood
May 01, 2025 at 06:05 pm
World, the human identity crypto project co-founded by OpenAI's Sam Altman has officially launched in six U.S. cities: Los Angeles, Miami, Austin, San Francisco, Nashville, and Atlanta.
World, the human identity crypto project co-founded by OpenAI’s Sam Altman is launching in six U.S. cities: Los Angeles, Miami, Austin, San Francisco, Nashville, and Atlanta.
The launch allows Americans to earn WLD tokens—currently valued at $0.96 and down 9.81% in 24 hours—for verifying their personhood and securing a World ID. The expansion comes amid President Donald Trump’s administration showing more openness toward crypto innovation.
World aims to create a global network to distinguish real people from AI-generated actors, becoming increasingly relevant in the age of deepfakes and widespread bot activity.
The project, previously known as Worldcoin, is already testing a World Visa card later this year, which will be directly linked to users’ World App wallets. This will allow holders to spend WLD tokens and other crypto assets wherever Visa is accepted, and merchants will receive fiat currency without needing to interact with crypto.
This move is a significant step in bridging the gap between decentralized finance and everyday commerce, one of the biggest challenges the space faces.
At the same time, World is partnering with Match Group’s (NASDAQ: MTCH)Tinder for a pilot program in Japan to verify user authenticity. The initiative will see the dating app giant’s platform integrate World’s technology to detect and eliminate fake profiles and bot interactions.
This partnership signifies a broader ambition to embed digital identity verification into widely used social platforms, ensuring that users connect only with real people through secure, decentralized identity protocols.
To onboard the next wave of users, World is developing mini-Orbs, smaller versions of the original large Orbs used for scanning and verifying users’ irises. These smaller tools will be more portable and easily deployed to new locations, accelerating the project’s journey toward its 1 billion user goal.
In other news, the World App now includes the Kalshi Mini App, allowing verified users to directly access and participate in Kalshi’s prediction markets. This functionality introduces new use cases for the World ID and WLD token, showcasing them as integral parts of the broader service ecosystem.
Furthermore, the partnership with Razer is expanding, with plans to introduce the World service in selected retail stores. This move will diversify the project’s real-world presence and introduce it to a wider consumer base.
