How Much Is Warren Buffett Making Per Year in Interest from His Treasury Bills?

How Much Is Warren Buffett Making Per Year in Interest from His Treasury Bills?

Warren Buffett, a name synonymous with investing prowess, is known for his extraordinary ability to generate wealth through a variety of avenues.

The chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A, NYSE:BRK.B) is widely regarded as the greatest investor of all time, and for good reason.

Throughout his illustrious career, Buffett has an impressive track record of making smart investment decisions, which have not only brought him massive personal wealth but have also contributed to the financial well-being of countless others.

One of the most interesting aspects of Buffett’s portfolio is his significant holdings in U.S. Treasuries. Essentially government bonds issued by the U.S. government, these investments provide a steady source of income.

Recently, new data has shed light on just how much Buffett is earning from his Treasury investments, and the figures are nothing short of astounding.

The Size of Buffett’s Treasury Holdings

As of the latest reports, Buffett’s stake in U.S. Treasuries stands at an staggering $286 billion.

To put that into perspective, this mind-boggling amount is being used to fund a large portion of the U.S. government’s operations.

Now, you might be wondering, what kind of income does Buffett receive on his Treasury holdings? Well, according to recent calculations, Buffett is estimated to be earning approximately $12.6 billion in annual interest on his $286 billion Treasury position.

Yes, you read that right—$12.6 billion each year for holding U.S. government bonds. At this level of income, it’s safe to say that Buffett is in a comfortable financial position, to say the least.

This astronomical sum in income is roughly equivalent to about $80 per year for every single taxpayer in the United States.

To put it another way, Buffett’s returns from Treasuries are so massive that they’re contributing significantly to the overall financial landscape of the U.S.

"Warren Buffett is making $12,600,000,000 PER YEAR in interest from his treasury bills.

Insane!

While $12.6 billion in annual interest might sound like an impressive amount, it’s important to consider the broader economic context.

Over the past five years, the U.S. dollar has been experiencing a decline in purchasing power due to inflation.

According to Truflation, the dollar has lost more than 27% of its value over this period. This means that although Buffett is collecting a large sum of money from interest on his Treasuries, the real value of those payments is being diminished to some degree by inflation.

Another factor to keep in mind is the evolution of the interest rate environment. Back in 2021 and the early part of 2022, interest rates were significantly lower.

As a result, Buffett’s earnings from his Treasuries weren’t as substantial at that time compared to what they are now. This is a crucial aspect for Buffett, who is renowned for his long-term perspective on investing.

Will Buffett Sell His Treasury Holdings?

Given the current climate of high inflation and shifting interest rates, one big question arises: Will Buffett opt to continue holding his $286 billion in U.S. Treasuries, or will he decide to sell them and allocate his investments elsewhere in 2025?

A large part of this decision will turn on the future direction of interest rates. Many experts, including Buffett himself, have been speculating that the Federal Reserve may begin cutting interest rates in the latter half of 2025.

If that happens, it could change the equation for Buffett and other Treasury holders. Lower interest rates could result in lower returns on new Treasury investments, which might prompt Buffett to pivot toward asset classes that offer better yields.
