A new study by researchers at the University of Zurich has found that a gene variant linked to increased risk of Alzheimer's disease may also be associated with a lower risk of multiple sclerosis (MS).

The findings, published in the journal Brain, could help scientists better understand the biological processes underlying both conditions.

Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects memory, thinking and other cognitive abilities. MS is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system.

The researchers studied the gene variant in a sample of over 10,000 individuals with MS and compared them to a control group.

They found that the gene variant was associated with a 20 per cent lower risk of MS. The researchers also found that the gene variant was more common in women than men.

"Our findings suggest that this gene variant could be a target for future research into new treatments for MS," said researcher.

"We are hopeful that this research will contribute to the development of new therapies that can delay or prevent the onset of Alzheimer's disease."

The study was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
