Several bitcoiners are concerned about the direction bitcoin adoption has taken and how institutions are now dominating the narrative. This new breed of users, the “suitcoiners,” does not share the same vision as the crypto founding fathers.

‘Suitcoiners Are Not Led by Libertarian or Cypherpunk Ideologies’

Since its inception in 2009, when bitcoin was developed to address the deficiencies in the current fiat system, the narrative behind its main adoption drive has shifted several times. On social media, bitcoiners have expressed their worries about how the institutionalization of the space, driven by Wall Street, is changing the ideas behind crypto, namely decentralization, privacy, and disconnection from the current financial system.

Jameson Lopp, co-founder and CSO of Casa, a bitcoin services company, referred to this phenomenon. He noted that as new entrants, whom he called “suitcoiners,” take hold of bitcoin, “it can evolve in ways early adopters dislike, leaving them disillusioned.”

He assessed:

The suitcoiners are here and they aren’t driven by libertarian or cypherpunk ideals.

Nonetheless, he acknowledged that this takeover was expected and that it was impossible to stop, as bitcoin’s proposal took the center of the economic stage. “Will be interesting to see how it shakes out and what values the game theory will manage to persist,” he concluded.

HoldMagoo, an active bitcoiner on social media, acknowledged that the prime cryptocurrency had indeed been captured but stressed that this could be a good thing as it could act as a Trojan horse.

“It is not until Bitcoin has marinated fully into the financial system, political system, and culture that it will then be able to start eroding the power structures we so desperately want to see destroyed,” he stressed.

The discussion about the current state of bitcoin adoption and its future is still out there, with some stating that this takeover might spur changes in the current pillars of the bitcoin philosophy, including the 21 million token issuance limit and its security model.
