U.S. Army's Best Squad Emerges from Rigorous South Korean Competition
Camp Humphreys, South Korea - In a testament to their exceptional combat skills and teamwork, five soldiers from the U.S. Army's 11th Engineer Battalion have emerged victorious in the prestigious Best Squad competition held at Camp Casey, South Korea.
The arduous three-day contest pitted six elite five-man squads from across the 2nd Infantry Division (2ID) and two squads from the rotational 3rd Cavalry Regiment against each other. These highly trained units faced a gauntlet of demanding challenges designed to test their physical prowess, combat readiness, and tactical acumen.
The soldiers underwent rigorous assessments in the Army Combat Fitness Test, demonstrating both strength and endurance. They navigated intricate weapons ranges with precision and accuracy, showcasing their firearms proficiency. A grueling 12-mile march tested their stamina and determination. Finally, they executed complex warrior tasks and squad battle drills, demonstrating their ability to operate as a cohesive team under pressure.
After intense competition, Squad 3 from the 11th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade, emerged triumphant, earning the coveted title of Best Squad. Each member received the Army Commendation Medal, a testament to their outstanding performance, and a tomahawk trophy, a symbol of their unwavering spirit.
Second place honors went to Squad 6 from the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Cavalry, who had arrived in South Korea from Fort Cavazos, Texas, in February. Their exceptional efforts were recognized with Army Achievement Medals.
During the awards ceremony held outside the 2ID headquarters at Camp Humphreys, the best noncommissioned officer (NCO) and best soldier were also recognized. Sgt. Isaa Alcala of the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade and Pfc. Kallen Gassett of the 11th Engineer Battalion, respectively, received the prestigious honors and were awarded 2ID coins and tomahawks.
The Best Squad competition is a rigorous test of military prowess, demanding not only individual skills but also the ability to work together as a synchronized unit. The victorious 11th Engineer Battalion squad demonstrated exceptional teamwork, resilience, and a profound understanding of modern combat tactics.
Their triumph serves as a testament to the exceptional training and dedication of the soldiers who comprise the 2nd Infantry Division. They stand ready to defend the interests of the United States and its allies, embodying the Army's motto of "This We'll Defend."
